A domain name is a unique alphanumeric designation (including letters from A to Z for English domains, A to Z for Russian domains, numbers from 0 to 9 and a hyphen "-") which is an essential element of the Internet address. A domain name allows you to identify a website or email address on the Internet.
The registered domain name, at the request of the owner, can be active or inactive (used or not used). If a domain name is active, it is associated with an IP address — the unique numeric address of the computer (host) on which the website is located, denoted by the domain name.
The Internet is a collection of local area networks of computers located around the world, which are interconnected according to the same rules, called protocols. These rules are used on a voluntary basis, as there is no formally established or government mechanism for enforcing them.
One crucial set of rules, known as the Domain Name System or DNS (Domain Names System), links names like www.webnames.ru to numeric addresses that computers use to communicate with each other.
It is these Domain Names that people use to find the desired resource on the global network or send an e-mail message.
A domain name consists of several fields separated by dots. The rightmost margin is called the Top Level Domain, then right to left, followed by the domain names (subdomains) of the lower level.
Each Top Level Domain has an administrator, called the Zone Administrator, which is the legal entity responsible for managing and regulating the strategy for this Domain.
The hierarchical structure of domain names can be represented as a tree. The full domain name ends with a dot ".", Denoting the root of the domain tree (this trailing dot is not visible to the user). Further (from right to left) the top-level domains follow the hierarchy, followed by the second-level domains, then the third level (see figure). Third-level domains are subdomains (subdomains) for second-level domains, and second-level domains are subdomains for top-level domains. From each other, they are separated by dots.
The figure illustrates the hierarchical organization of domain names with examples, including many top-level domains:
The domain name system translates names into numeric addresses transparently for the end user and vice versa. This process relies on a system of servers, called name servers, that store data that links domain names to numeric addresses. Each name server is responsible for its own zone and stores a limited set of names and numeric addresses.
All name servers are associated with Root name servers that coordinate data and allow users to find the server responsible for the Internet site they want to reach. They are called root, because they function at the root level - they serve the only root domain "."
One of the Root Servers is the "Authoritative Server" (Root Server A) On the Authoritative server, a master copy of the file that identifies all top-level domains, the so-called Root Zone File, is supported, this file is copied to the other root servers using a specified algorithm.
Name servers are organized into hierarchies like domain names.
For example, if someone wants to connect to the web site of the portal WebNames.ru - http://www.webnames.ru, his computer will ask for help from one of the root servers.
The root server will send a request to the server, which stores information about names ending in .ru. This server, in turn, will send the request to a third server, the one that knows the numeric addresses for all names ending in .webnames.ru.
This third server will return a numeric address to the user to achieve a direct link to www.webnames.ru.
It should be noted that the name servers retain in their memory the results of previous requests, so when the User repeats his request, he will receive the numeric address of the web site www.webnames.ru from the nearest name server in the chain, namely from the name server of his local network.
